From Complexity to Connection: Inside Francis’ Role in Risk
For Francis, connection is what turns a complex, enterprise-wide role into something genuinely rewarding.
“We work in a really collaborative way,” he explains. “We make time throughout the week to understand each other’s priorities and how we can best support one another. And it’s not all about work. Talking about home life or weekend plans helps to build a healthy team dynamic.”
That sense of connection is strengthened by the wealth of experience within Francis’ team. Rather than relying on a single mentor, he sees collective knowledge as a real advantage. “There isn’t always a ‘right’ answer in Risk. Having different perspectives means I’m constantly learning.”
Freedom plays a big role in how Francis works. As a fan of SBG’s hybrid approach, he chooses to spend most of the week in the Bristol office, making use of hot-desking to stay connected across the business. “Group Risk operates enterprise-wide,” he explains. “Moving around helps me build relationships and understand different teams better.”
Taking ownership is something Francis actively leans into. He’s led communications within the Risk team, deliberately injecting humour into messages to improve engagement. “Risk doesn’t always have the most exciting reputation,” Francis admits. “But clearer, more memorable comms help key messages land, and that makes a real difference.”
One of his proudest achievements has been bringing SBG’s Governance, Risk & Compliance tool to life. “Taking it from dormant software to a core part of how we manage enterprise risk has been incredibly satisfying.”
Francis is also exploring the future, currently experimenting with agentic AI, particularly where it can reduce manual effort and allow people to focus on higher-value decision making. “It’s early days, but it’s exciting to look at how AI can help us move faster, while still doing things safely.”
That balance between pace and protection is central to how Francis sees the role. “Risk is often seen as a blocker. But it’s just as much about opportunity, including the risk of doing nothing. Our job is to help SBG innovate quickly and responsibly.”
And what fuels Francis day to day? “Connection. And copious amounts of sandwiches.
